Late penalty seals derby win over Marsh Vale
A nerve-shredding finish at the Rec saw the 1st XV edge a River Town classic 27–19, with the boot of Eli Brennan settling it three minutes from time.
There are wins, and then there are wins over Marsh Vale. On a grey Saturday afternoon at the Recreation Ground, in front of the biggest home crowd of the season so far, Blackpine's 1st XV dug out a 27–19 victory that felt every bit as good as the scoreline suggests — and then some.
It was a contest that swung one way and then the other, never letting the touchline settle. Marsh Vale arrived top of the early table and played like it, bullying the breakdown for the opening twenty minutes and forcing Blackpine into a string of penalties. But the hosts weathered it, and a thumping turnover from number eight Sam Okafor on his own 22 turned the mood of the afternoon.
From there Blackpine grew into the half. Brennan kicked the corners beautifully, the lineout clicked, and a driving maul off the back of it gave hooker Reece Dalton the simplest of finishes. 10–7 at the break, and the Rec sensed something was on.
Marsh Vale hit back
If the first half belonged to Blackpine's pack, the third quarter was all visitors. Marsh Vale's livewire fly-half carved through a tiring midfield twice in eight minutes, and suddenly the scoreboard read 19–10 the wrong way. The Rec went quiet. Sutton emptied his bench.
What followed was the bit you can't coach. The replacements lifted the tempo, the crowd found its voice again, and a length-of-the-field counter — started by full-back Joey Vance and finished in the corner by winger Theo Adeyemi — hauled Blackpine back to within two. Brennan's touchline conversion levelled it at 19-all with ten to play.
Brennan, ice cold
So it came down to one kick. With three minutes left and the scrum creaking forward, referee Alana Pryce blew for a Marsh Vale collapse, dead in front, 30 metres out. Brennan didn't so much as glance at the posts twice. Up, over, 22–19 — and a converted Okafor try in the dying seconds put a flattering gloss on a game that was tighter than the final 27–19 lets on.

It lifts Blackpine to second in the County League and sets up a mouth-watering trip to Holloway Park next Saturday. On this evidence, it's a side worth following — and the Rec will expect another full touchline.
